Sarah Frizzell, Taco Queen At The Lucky Taco, Talks Success
I’d name my autobiography…
Let’s Taco ‘Bout It.
To me success means…
Being proud & content with what you’ve achieved. In the earlier phases of The Lucky Taco, we were so focused on the next thing. The next product launch. The next colab. The new business opportunities, etc.…Which are all important stages of growth.
But my motto in 2019 was ‘Slow & Steady’. Take a breath. Pat yourself on the back for all the hard work that’s already been accomplished.
It’s very easy to lose sight of the wood for the trees. After 7 years, we’re finally beginning to hum, with some very well-established systems in place. We work with great people (great suppliers). We’ve overcome serious struggles & learnt a sh*t ton. Success to me, means being proud of both personal & business growth, and enjoying the ride.
The most rewarding part of my job…
Is happy customers. People taking the time to send us messages about how much they’ve enjoyed our tacos. Whether it be from The Lucky Taco Truck or from our retail taco kits & fiesta kits. I get a kick out of it every single time.
When someone tells us that ‘that’s the best taco I’ve ever eaten’ – I beam from ear to ear. Doesn’t get better than that for me.
My goals for 2020 are…
Growth for our Fiesta Meal Kits. We’re launching two new flavours; Spiced Fish & Prawn Picante, to go alongside the Sizzlin’ Steak, Chipotle Chicken & Veg Calabacita. That’s my main focus. It’s the most scalable aspect of our business.
We have some exciting colabs lined up with Chia Sisters, Proper Crisps & Moa Beer. We’ll also be working closely with our amigos at Jaguar on some exciting new projects. And of course, The Lucky Taco Truck will be poppin’ up in Ponsonby on special occasions.
The main challenge for women in business is…
RECOGNITION. When Otis & I started The Lucky Taco (we just had the truck)…SO MANY (mostly men) would quiz him about how we started the business and direct questions to him as if he were the boss. And some women.
He has always been amazingly supportive & quickly tells people that they better ask me, because I’m the boss. Otis has been integral in making me a strong wahine. He builds me up and I love him to bits. But yeah…it’s funny how people still stereotype the male to be the boss.
Big ups to all the boss babes out there!
Gender diversity in the workplace is…
Being inclusive of everyone. Otis and I run a very tight ship, whereby it’s mostly us at the coal-face. But our awesome crew of part time helpers over the years have been heterosexual, homosexual, transsexual, bisexual.
Don’t we all just want to be accepted for who we are?? And to trying to be anyone different…is bloody hard work.
